Where the grille is installed greatly determines how airflow is distributed through the room. Air supply grilles are normally mounted towards the room’s ceiling, so cool air is able to sink, while warmer air rises, creating a balance. Exhaust grilles are installed closer to the floor as stale air and moisture tend to settle. Grilles positioned too high, like those in some bathrooms, do not help in retrieving the humid air dispersed around the shower. If the grille is positioned lower, furniture tends to block air circulation, resulting in partially ventilated rooms. Ventilation blockages are normally the result of dirty grilles as a result of airflow. Empty slats that are filled with dust, hair, and other debris block the airflow path. Grilles that are blocked restrict the incoming fresh air and the outgoing stale air resulting in the room being poorly ventilated.

Using a vacuum attachment to remove surface dust or a damp cloth to wipe slats for cleaning purposes constitutes edge countertop maintenance. For edges located in dusty areas, like near windows or doors, more cleaning vacuuming and dusting may be required. Clean edges ensure the vacuumed airflow remains powerful and steady.
